Original Story, September 19, 9:50 p.m.
On Tuesday night, the Smith Valley Fire Protection District (SVFPD), Nevada Division of Forestry (NDF), Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and support agencies responded to reports of a wildfire on BLM land in the Pine Nut mountains near Red Canyon in Smith Valley.
As of September 19, the fire is estimated to be around 10 acres.
Due to the rocky and steep terrain in the area, fire crews are monitoring the spread over night. Resources have been stages to begin structure protection efforts in the morning.
Since the fire is located in Douglas County, this is a multi-jurisdictional response.
BLM, NDF, SVFPD, and Lyon County Emergency Management are coordinating with Douglas County Emergency Management and East Fork Fire Protection District.
Lyon County is urging residents and travelers to avoid the area of Sharon Way and Grant Drive in Smith Valley to allow for emergency vehicle access.
While there is no immediate threat to structures at this time, the county is asking that citizens near Red Canyon to remain vigilant and be prepared for potential evacuations by having a family emergency plan in place and gathering essentials such as medications, pets food and important documents.
Updates can be found on the Lyon County website and Facebook page.
