Sparks Elementary School Locked Down Lifted; Police Speak to Man |

A precautionary lockdown for an elementary school in Sparks was lifted Wednesday morning after a standoff with police ended peacefully.

Police responded to a home in the 3600 block of Keogh Drive in Sparks around 9 a.m. after a family member arrived at the police department saying her family member was acting erratically and walking around the home with an AR-15 Assault Rifle.

As a precaution, Lena Juniper Elementary School was briefly placed on lockdown.

Police surrounded the home and set up a perimeter and proceeded with caution.

“We took our time we got a good history on the family and our contacts with them and any other information we could gather from neighbors, family members etcetera so we could make contact with them and use that information to resolve it peacefully,” says Sgt. Greta Woyciehowsky.

Police eventually made contact with the man by phone and he exited the home unarmed.

Officers interviewed him but say he did not commit any crimes. He was taken to the hospital for an evaluation.
